The removal of all branches leaving only the main trunk of the tree to allow new growth to form a new crown. This procedure is only done to certain species of tree that will restore from the hard cut back.

This procedure promotes a dense re-growth of the crown and is usually done to maintain a tree’s height. It is usually not suitable to pollard mature trees as they are less likely to recover from the large wounds.
